Share strategies, ask about which resources are better suited or just plain better than others, or contact people to try and learn & converse with.

If you want to get started, you certainly don't need to spend a dime. Here are some helpful resources.

The University of Texas's Hindi Flagship Program hosts some different learning materials for the beginner in pdf format. A good beginning point is Hindi Praveshika, which will teach you the hindi script (devanagari) and basic sentence construction.

The University of North Carolina also hosts a free online Hindi Textbook, A Door Into Hindi.
